Samsung have produced what looks to be a reasonably indestructable and flexible AM OLED mobile phone screen, I've heard of OLED but didnt realise it had been scaled down to this kind of size!

Watch the video!

It's been around for a while now but still manages to be one of the best selling low end payg smart phones available in the UK, as we've had it available on pre-pay-as-you-go.co.uk for a while now we thought it was time to bring it to the attention of those looking for a mobile within it's price bracket.

The cheap and cheerful LG GD510 POP,
is just what the doctor ordered! complete with a digital camera, a competent web browser which is easy to use when browsing the internet providing easy access to your favorite social networking sites such as face book MySpace bebo twitter ect. All delivered by its LG A-Class interface and bright and colourful 3 inch touch screen. The LG Pop offers an inexpensive package of basic Smartphone functionality to its user

The A-Class 3-way interface gives you three home screens to work from, they can be customized to how you like it by dragging and dropping widgets from your toolbar to the screen, then with a quick shake of the lg Pop all of your widgets are neatly put in order. The whole interface is colorful and vibrant and delivers a fun experience for it user, especially as the WQVGA renders up to 262,000 colours. With no 3G or Wi Fi connectivity the LG pop relies on its Quad band Edge connection, which means that full web pages do take a little while to load, but mobile compatible sites are quick and uncomplicated to navigate. It has a dedicated social networking application, this gives you access to Face book, Twitter and MySpace accounts.

The LG Pop has a 3 mega pixel digital camera; while the camera has a well organized display of its functions, the camera itself lacks flash and auto focus. Video capture is again, standard; it shoots 12 fps but it does allow for immediate upload to sites like YouTube by means of the Send options button, which is a bonus. The phones Multimedia player plays back downloaded mp4 and 3gp videos very well, color is good and video runs very smoothly, frame capture has been included to capture a frame of footage and save it as a jpeg Image which is a nice little feature to have. The provided music player interface routinely organizes your loaded tracks into various categories like, artist and genre, album etc.

It has 42mb of internal memory but expandable up to up to 16GB with microSD, which should be enough to store all our videos, music tracks and games.

In all the LG Pop looks good; it performs well for the price and is perfectly affordable for first time Smartphone user, who wont be overwhelmed by advanced applications on offer. Yours thoughts please! Have you used this handset, own one or have some technical knowledge about it? Share your thoughts!
View the LG POP on our website for the latest offers.

The Samung Wave Smart Phone Coming Soon!

Coming to Pre-pay-as-you-go soon! Is a range of high end Smartphone’s that most people assume are only available on pay monthly contract, before you think it “yes” these handsets are going to be expensive on pay as you go and to be honest that’s true, but we’ve decided that if people like high end fancy mobiles then who are we to deny them. So here we go, the first handset were going to look at is the Samsung Wave..

The slim and lightweight Samsung Wave,
is the latest in Samsungs range of Smartphone’s. In addition the Wave is the first Samsung handset to use the new Bada operating system, which offers it's user plenty of controls, Flash support, and sensor support help applications to be more interactive. Service-centric features such as in-app-purchasing, SNS integration, and push notification help applications to offer customers a richer, more interactive experience.

The Wave handset features include a captivating 3.3” Super amoled touch screen which really brings colors and images to life for an unbeatable user experience. The super amoled screen has a brighter, clearer and less reflective display than its predecessors, offering high resolution images and video with mDNIe technology which is already incorporated into Samsungs LCD TVs and LED TVs.

With the recent craze for social websites Social Hub seamlessly brings together all social networks in one unified solution, it integrates all major email providers and network sites such as facebook, myspace, msn, twitter and yahoo. TouchWiz 3.0 UI means you have fully customizable menus and home page that you can change to give instant access to all your social networking sites, media player and all your favorite photos, the Quick panel prioritizes choice applications into one screen for ease of access. You can download a large collection of apps from Samsung apps like games, ebooks , social networking, health and lifestyle and navigation With multi codec support for its Divx and Xvid players it gives 5.1 surround sound for a great personal entertainment system, 720p HD video decoding and recording which makes it perfect for capturing, sharing and viewing video.

All in all we think the Wave looks like it's going to be an usefull if not great addition from Samsung, probably though the proof will be in the using and customer experience also alot will depend on how Bada competes with Android, symbian and the other operating sytems out there. Yours thoughts please! Have you used the Wave or own one, have some technical knowledge? Share your thoughts!
Samsung Wave Offers

Practical Portables - Making your netbook truely mobile

The netbook is poised to revolutionise the laptop industry. Laptops freed computer users from their homes and offices, and netbooks with accessories will free them from almost every restraint. Knowing what accessories are available for netbooks will help you start to free yourself today.

Batteries
Netbooks are unique because they are so small, and the reduction of size leads to less power usage. In fact, many people buy netbooks specifically for their lowered power usage. So, one of the most popular accessories is an extra battery.
Because netbooks are so small, their batteries are tiny. Some batteries are barely six inches long, and are so light that they wouldn't be noticed in a briefcase or backpack. Having an arsenal of backup batteries for your netbook could eliminate the need for finding power sources for days.
However, recharging each of those batteries one at a time could be frustrating.

HTC's UK executive director Jon French has indicated his company is set to challenge the dominant mobile phone manufacturers in the UK more over the next six months.

French believes HTC to be one of the only companies that can compete with the current top four, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG, Samsung and of course Apple, even in the existing economic climate.

And as the biggest and one of the first partners to develop for the Android Operating system, French believes this to be a huge plus for any company looking to compete in such a volatile market place. HTC continues to develop innovative devices such as the recent HTC DESIRE

HTC plan to be everywhere in the next few months, with an TV advertisment campaign, magazines etc all of which are aimed at increasing consumers awarness of their brand.

Take a look at the latest HTC Mobile phones

Sony Ericsson have added a QWERTY keyboard to the Recent Vivaz providing a user experience optimised for messaging and entertainment. The full QWERTY keyboard allows users to communicate quickly and efficiently via email, SMS or social networking updates.

Just like the recent Sony Ericsson Vivaz, announced in January, Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro allows users to produce and broadcast their best experiences in HD video. The open platform also allows users to personalise their entertainment experience by downloading great applications through PlayNow™ and the Symbian Developer Community.

Having announced Sony Ericsson Vivaz in January Sony Ericsson are now adding a sister phone that includes a QWERTY keyboard along with the touch screen for a superior messaging and entertainment experience. Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro features the manufacturers new design philosophy ’human curvature’, which according to sources will become a dominant feature of the Sony Ericsson handset portfolio in the future. Designed to mirror the shape of the human body, and at the same time delivering a precise and compelling way of interacting with the phone, Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro is instantly recognisable.

Vodafone Access Gateway - a new way to boost your phone signal in buildings

A common experience with many mobile phone buyers – you spend weeks researching the various phones on offer, make your choice and place the order. The phone arrives and it looks and feels every bit as good as you thought it would. Savour this moment – because you know what’s going to happen next....?
That’s right, after giving it just a quick charge you fire it up and an all too familiar symbol on the screen makes your heart sink once more – just one lousy bar of signal! No matter how hard you try to convince yourself, you just know that you have bought yet another phone that will be difficult or impossible to use at home!

It's a sad fact that the walls of your home or office will absorb a lot of the energy that modern mobile signals are made of - not so much of a problem where you have perfect coverage, but for those of us not so fortunate it can be a real pain! To get around the problem would involve the networks erecting a lot more base stations and we all know that this just isn't going to happen.

Well, this inevitable disappointment may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to the new Access Gateway from Vodafone, you can have the equivalent of your very own personal base station in your own home or office. The Access Gateway works by using your existing home broadband connection to route your mobile voice and data calls, as well as texts via the internet. The device can handle 4 simultaneous calls and takes up no more space than a conventional router. Even if you have no signal at all where you live the Access Gateway will provide a means of making and receiving mobile calls with perfect clarity and maximum efficiency. No more wandering to the end of the garden or leaning out of windows – you’ll wonder how you ever managed without this little box of tricks before?

The Gateway, which uses Femtocell technology, will work with any Vodafone 3G handset and in any location - provided you have a broadband connection of over 1Mbps. Vodafone have tested the Gateway for over 6 months and claim that the technology works perfectly, even when the broadband line is in heavy use.

The downside is that it isn’t free, the device will be offered as either an outright purchase or as part of a monthly calling plan. However, anyone who’s struggled to make a call from home may well think that the convenience this device offers is well worth the initial cost? There are plans to develop the service further by offering the equivalent of Wi-Fi in your home, which may appeal to some, particularly when you consider that many people experience some difficulty with traditional Wi-Fi equipment. It remains to be seen, however, whether this idea will take off - but it could herald a whole new way of connecting to the mobile networks inside buildings and that has to be a welcome advance?

The Vodafone Access Gateway is available to buy on-line or from Vodafone stores and is expected to cost around £160. Monthly rental plans will also be offered for around £5 a month on its own, or as part of a mobile airtime contract.

The camera phone - is it the future of mobile photography?

Mobile Phones these days come with all sorts of features and applications that make mobiles in the day of ‘Del Boy’, and his 1980’s brick phone pail in to comparison. Back then, apart from scientists and boffins, who could have imagined that camera phones would be used by nearly 90% of people between the ages of 15 and 34 in under 20 years time? The development of the Camera Phone has brought about the dawn of a new age in Telecommunications. As quick as you were able to take a picture of you and your mates, you could also send it off via SMS for others to see, this meant life would never be the same.

Virtually every Mobile Phone on the market has a Camera built in, which varies in its capabilities. The main two things to note are the digital zoom, specifically how many x 2, 4, 6 or 8x zoom, and is it a Mega pixel or VGA camera. Some mobile phones on the market these days have excellent quality Camera lenses from well known manufacturers, such as Carl Zeiss. This has made people no longer need to carry the disposable or indeed the digital camera that has been a mainstay of gifts at Christmas in the past.

The most important thing when you choose a Camera Phone is to decide exactly what you are going to do with it. Are you buying the Mobile just to use as a Camera, or are you buying the Mobile Phone to use as its original intended purpose, to make Phone Calls. Whatever you decide to buy, make sure that you check out all the mobiles specifications very carefully, so that you can get specifications you require.

Apparently, there are a number of mobiles on the market with an 8 Mega Pixel camera and indeed there will be a new Sony Ericsson on the market which will have a 12 Mega Pixel camera, it may be available later in 2009 just in time for Christmas.

It beggars’ belief just how quickly this little handheld gadget has become such an integral part of everyday life. I often wonder whether the camera phone is the future of mobile photography, or if it will be around in another 20 years? I suppose only the boffins will know.

O2 Unlimited Question And Answer

Recently we received the following question from one of our Twitter Followers.

Please could you assist me? I have just bought an O2 pay as you go phone. I have some questions about O2 unlimited.

If I join O2 unlimited and then at some time in the future miss topping up by a minimum of £10 what happens. Will I need to re-register for O2 unlimited or do the unlimited text/calls just recommence once I top-up again?

Do I need to register other O2 numbers that I would like to send unlimited texts/calls to or does this apply to any O2 number.

I have a friend who is currently on a different tariff providing them with 500 free texts to any network. If they transfer to O2 unlimited and find that this tariff does not suit their usage profile, will they be able to switch back to their original tariff.

We allways try and give a full detailed response for any questions we receive, below is our response.

Thank you for emailing Pre-pay-as-you-go with your questions.

We will definitely be able to advise you regarding your query.

The free allowances that you receive are always added on your anniversary date and not every time you Top-Up your phone. If it happens that you forgot to Top-Up your account then you won't receive your free allowances, so next when you Top-Up that will be your new anniversary date.

On O2 Pay & Go you don't have to Top-Up every month to keep your account active. If you do want to get one of the free allowances every month, then you'll need to Top-Up every month. However if you just want to use your phone when you need it, you can do that. You would simply just Top-Up the phone when you needed too.

You will still be on your same O2 Unlimited tariff and don't need to re-register, if you don't Top-Up your account. In the meantime you won't receive your free allowances. To receive these free minutes you'll need to Top-Up your account.

In the O2 Unlimited tariff, you receive unlimited calls and texts to O2 numbers when topped-up with £15. To receive only unlimited texts to O2 numbers then you need to Top-Up with £10. You don't need to register any O2 numbers, it is for all the O2 numbers.

If your friend changes to the O2 Unlimited tariff then he/she can always change back to their original tariff, provided they are on the new updated tariffs. Darren, this is because we no longer offer old tariffs.

O2 recently updated their tariffs so they all offer a greater flexibility in the amount of allowance you can receive each month.

You can view all o2 PayG tariffs here, or alternatively if your looking for click here to view The latest o2 PayG phones

I hope these answers help!

Thanks to Russell siddorn for asking the question.

Mobile Banking Overtakes Phone Banking In The UK

Information has released showing the results of a consumer research survey which found mobile banking has gained a foothold in the UK.

Beating branch and telephone banking in terms of popularity, the survey found that 37% of UK mobile phone users have taken up mobile phone banking solutions. When asked which banking method users preferred, those surveyed found mobile banking to be more convenient and easier to use than telephone banking. Conversely, when asked about branch banking, fewer people selected it as their prefered method of banking, with only 3% choosing it.

Research revealed that the greatest benefit of mobile banking to consumers is the ability to access banking services anywhere, at any time.

Clearly from the results of the survey peoples behaviour is changing to meet the covenience of mobile banking, People questioned during the survey rated their favourite services as: balance notifications; suspicious activity notifications; fraud alert notifications; and low balance, overdraft, and credit limit notifications. Also the ability to view statements and transaction history was mentioned as a major plus.

A leading businessman involved in developing mobile banking was quoted this week as saying “Consumers today want real time, round the clock access to their finances and are demanding a higher level of convenience for managing such information. It’s no surprise that the ‘anywhere, anytime’ aspect of mobile banking was one of the greatest benefits found in the research.

The results highlighted two reasons for a future possible slowing in the growth of mobile banking in the UK. The top two reasons were identified as, security (49% of people surveyed) and cost (31% of people surveyed).

Author: David Heally

So is the future of banking going to be on our mobiles? personally I dont know anyone who uses it so that in its self makes me think its not for me, well not just yet anyway.

What do you think?

The Orange Vegas

Its been on the site for a while now and has proved to be a popular mobile phone, the Orange Vegas also known as the ZTE X760 was recently reduced in price from it's origional price of £58.50 to £40.00 and now to an amazing! price of £29.00 with £10 credit included in the price on Orange pay as you go.

We like to do some research on handsets we have on the site, so that we can inform our visitors.

So usually a visit to the manufacturers website can give us all the information we need, but the Vegas/x760 has proved to be a bit of an enigma as Orange's specification and feature break down is very limited. And we could not find any mention of this model on the ZTE website

After searching through the Google results we have managed to put enougth information together to give our visitors a good idea what this phone is capable of.

We never thought we would see a TFT touch screen mobile EVER at this price, well at least not for a couple of years. The Orange Vegas is available in pink or black and has a 2.4" TFT touch-screen display, and a 1.3 megapixel camera, bluetooth, microSD card slot with a maximum capacity of up to 4GB.

Soon we will get our hands on one and compare it to other handsets of similar spec/price.

If you own one or have used it, please let us know what you think.

Find out more about the Orange Vegas

Reduce the Environmental impact – Recycle your old mobile phone

Old or unused mobile phones create a significant percentage of the worlds overall, electronic waste, and the scale of the problem is growing year on year. This year, total worldwide mobile phone ownership is set to surpass 3 billion. That is approximately one handset for every two people on the planet, and with growing demand and development, the market shows no sign of reaching saturation point. The latest industry figures show that each mobile purchased is used for a average of just 18 months, which means that in as little as three years time there will be around 6 billion unused mobiles filling draws and cupboards around the world.

If you could lay these handsets out end-to-end they would easily stretch around the world multiple times, yet the majority eventually find their way into rubbish bins or a hole in the ground, with no thought given to recycling. All this adds up to an overwhelming environmental problem and one that mobile manufacturers and retailers need to take more seriously. If the mobile industry does not begin to take official guidelines and environmental concerns, more seriously regulations and policy can only begin to come down on it.

Simply discarding a mobile phone into the bin instead of recycling it generally leads to it reaching a landfill or being incinerated, which releases many toxic substances that are important to the operation and manufacture of the handset. However, these toxic substances include heavy metals such as nickel, mercury, and Cadmium one of the earth’s most deadly substances and many more! Which just do not degrade. When a handset reaches landfill these substances, can pollute the environment by leaking into water sources and the food chain, all this leads to a huge ongoing health risk alongside other human initiated environmental factors.

Although not a complete solution to the problem, recycling a mobile phone can help to reduce its environmental impact by prolonging its usefulness, as well as put some extra money in your pocket. Many people hoard mobile phones for one reason or another, probably out of some kind of desire to hold on to the handsets value. As I write this, I am going to check to see how much money I can get for a Sony Ericsson K800i, which is in my bedside table. After checking with envirofone I found that I can get £24.20. Envirofone are going to send out a package for me to send it off in, when they receive the handset and check it over a cheque will be sent to me.

Let’s face it it’s not really that morally correct to use making money as your motivation to recycle an old mobile phone, but why keep something that provides you with no tangible benefits. At least selling it can enable you to play your part the recycling process.

Ever since we set up our Twitter page last year www.twitter.com/prepayasyougo we have been receiving questions from followers about everything you could imagine, PAYG, Contracts, Handsets, specifications, How to top up the list could go on and on.
Some of the conversations with our followers have been extensive and hopefully ended with a full answer to their questions; but some of the questions we receive have required an answer based on opinion. This type of question would be someone requesting advice on which handset is better or which handset would you buy etc
Obviously here at pre-pay-as-you-go we try not to be biased when giving advice but with so many questions being requiring our opinions we thought why not put the questions to our visitors to get a true unbiased answer.

Touch screen mobiles are they reliable and main stream?

What was your first experience of a touch screen mobile, where you happy with it or was it unresponsive to the touch or over sensitive? My first experience was the LG Viewty and within the first five minutes of using it I knew I was in for trouble.

The responsiveness of the touch screen was sluggish and the mobile it’s self had limited options and software pre installed, overall a pretty poor handset which I eventually sent back to Orange.

My next attempt at using a touch screen was the LG arena, initially its touch screen was a huge improvement over the viewty’s and it was filled with absolutely loads of features. But possibly to many as a week after receiving it the screen started to freeze and I would have to take out the battery to turn it off. The same problems materialised even after exchanging the handset for a new one, two times, I must admit this has coloured my view of the touch screen mobile ever since.

That said though I have managed to get to grips with my wife’s Samsung Tocco Lite, but as I’m on contract and she’s on pay as you go it’s not a phone I would consider upgrading to.

With my upgrade date quickly coming upon me I’ve been toying with the idea of trying a touch screen mobile again, but that would mean abandoning my old trusty Nokia n95 8gb which hasn’t failed me yet, and with touch screen seeming so main stream now and there being so many to choose from I’m not sure what handset to choose.

I’ve even considered getting an Iphone 3GS but as I don’t need or want to use apps how useful would it be without them, apart from the obvious calling and texting?

So I guess I’m asking for you who is reading this your opinion as to what handset to upgrade to, I have considered the Nokia x6 I suppose it would be a logical upgrade from the N95, it has twice the internal memory at 16gb and of course a larger screen which is touch sensitive but that’s it I think. Both are wifi enabled, GPS and Bluetooth etc so again I’m unsure.

Anyone’s opinion is welcome

Thanks to the pre-pay-as-you-go blog for posting my question.

Thanks to Andrew thomas from Coventry for sending in this Question to our readers, we hope you get some helpfull responses.

Many people when they think pay as you go think of it as just having a phone that is topped up with credit when needs be.

This could not be further from the truth as in the past few years all of the UK based mobile networks have introduced pay as you go extras sometimes referred to as bonuses, perks, rewards or boosters.

The pay as you go extra is an extremely useful tool for pay as you go users as its main purpose is to stretch the value of a top up and save money.

Extras come in all shapes and sizes and allow users to buy extra texts, minutes and internet time directly from any pay as you go mobile phone with the credit already purchased.

Even better is the current influx of special automatic bonuses mobile networks are giving away instantly with differing top up amounts.

As an example, Virgin mobile recently released a new pay as you tariff called the Addict tariff, which gives a user an instant reward for topping up.

Rewards include
Three hundred free texts to UK networks, Web access for 30p a day, 20p per min flat rate for calls to UK mobiles & landlines, for topping up with £10 a month.

For further Addidct tariff information please go to Virgin pre pay sim cards

Mobile Phone Wireless Charging

Everyone will agree the most annoying aspect of a mobile phone is when the battery dies, especially if the battery dies when you are in the middle of a call or on the way to a meeting.

The obvious solution to this problem is charge your phone before you use it – however just doing this can be a chore, finding the right cable, finding a spare plug and waiting for it to charge.

However the future has arrived, or so the manufactures would love us to believe, Wireless Charging !

You can now charge your phone or gadget wirelessly, gone is the need to find the cable and find a spare plug. You can simply place a special cover on your phone, also adding protection to the phone like any cover would, and then place your phone on a special mat and as if by magic it charges your phone.

Many different gadgets can be charged from one mat meaning no more hassle finding a spare plug or looking for the charger.

Also if your friend or workplace has the same mat you can just put your phone on their pad to get charged. However the obvious draw back is there is quite a few wireless charging mats and adapters on the market and they are not compatible with each other. The future is a wireless charging standard, so all mats charge all receivers.

Imagine how useful it would be to be to walk into Starbucks and put your phone on the side and have it charge whilst you drink your coffee, or the table on the train charges your phone? Hopefully this is not too far away, however I do believe the best is yet to come with wireless charging! Watch this space!

Mobile phone’s are they the future of mobile computing?

The first notion of a hand held computers appeared on our screens during episodes of Star Trek. Mr Spock holds his Tricorder, which is essentially a lap top computer with a built in scanner. You can see from the image the basic design incorporates a screen, possibly a fraction smaller than the modern Mobile Phone Screens which often have a size range from 2 inch to 3.5 inch in size.

Little did the creators of such sci-fi movies realise that they would have inspired a myriad of technological advances and indeed items that are now in every day use.

One other feature of Spock’s Tricorder was that he used to play it like a Harp, which is amusing when you consider that modern mobile phones include entertainment features such as games like Guitar Hero, audio and video players.
Clearly scientists identified that there would be a need for an analytical device that could also have a multiple purpose, including communication and entertainment.

Current Mobile Computing

The notebook computer, is extremely popular, small and more portable in comparison to a standard size Laptop and easily fit into bags etc, but a computer is all that it is. "Yes I agree with what you are thinking" with a voip phone attached you can make calls. Attaching a bluetooth dongle allows you to share files, you can play games and send email. But all this adds weight and size to the note book and makes it less practical as a portable computing device.

So what is the future of mobile computing?

Mobile Phone technology has advanced so much that phones have become thinner, smaller; and at the same time processing power & storage capacity have increased to make the modern mobile a multi media device. This has also led to some mobile phones being designed with built in Qwerty keyboards. Therefore, does this mean that the age of the Notebook Computer will be short lived, as it is much easier for us to carry around the Qwerty Keyboard Mobile Phone

Example Handsets

The LG KS360 has a slide out Qwerty Keyboard so that the user can easily type away while browsing the Internet or sending an e-mail.

The Nokia N97, this phone comes with a 5-megapixel camera, has a touch sensitive screen, and a Qwerty Keyboard, as well as a plethora of usefull office and entertainment features/software all wrapped up into an ergonomically pleasing mobile.

As more applications are added and the consumer gets used to working on a smaller screen, the notepad computer may in the near future only appeal to business users who are travelling long distances via public transport. For the average person on the street, the mobile with a Qwerty keyboard I beleive will be the better option as it can be used anywhere, is small and compact, a telephone as well as being a means of surfing the Net, e-mailing, entertainment and visiting Social Websites.

Do you have an opinion on any of the points made above, or do you simply agree or disagree with the thoughts of the author?

Author: Phill Chesters

Buying a mobile phone for a Christmas gift for a young person

It's a great idea to buy a mobile phone for children as they get older and start to go out with their friends. Mobiles mean they can be in with the crowd having a funky mobile with all the latest gadgets on it (camera, mp3 player, games) but also that you can ring them when they're late home and make sure they're on their way. It can also be used to track children as there are several companies offering this service. You can then keep an eye on where your kids are.

A mobile is also useful for when they want to ring you for a lift home. It can be reassuring to know that children can ring you the minute they need help with a mobile phone - but that's only true if they have credit on it. Sometimes the more credit you put on a phone the more they'll spend. This is something to watch with children - keep an eye on how much they spend on their mobile and set limits. Make sure they know what the limits are and it'll be easy to restrict this.

So they can always ring you it's possible to add a reverse number call option to their phone book. Look into these though as they can be quite dear to use.

So what age should you buy a child a mobile phone? I think the older they are the better. Very young children have no need of one - buy them a plastic toy version that beeps if they insist on a phone. Early teens should be the earliest - some parents see the start of secondary school as important for this first phone purchase. Whether you buy one for Christmas or a birthday, it's a good idea to check with the child what phone they might want - if they are going to want to take photos on their phone it's important to make sure they have a camera built in! A phone really can make an excellent Christmas present!

Author Di Drinkwater.

Are you looking to buy a PayG Mobile as a Christmas present? If so we have put together some information, in which we have arranged handsets via price range. Click the relevant link for your budget. PayG £10-£30 PayG £30-£60 PayG £60-£100

Will Santa be delivering you a new mobile phone this Christmas?

Well it’s started, adverts for Christmas on the telly in the papers and magazines everywhere its only November, and yes, I know what you are thinking, “it can only get worse” and I agree with you.

However, if you look past your humbug nature clutching on to your wallet or purse (and I am no different) even you will find yourself having your attention caught by the odd advert here and there. No matter what it is you are interested in, marketing these days is a fine art with visuals and repetition needed to catch even the loathing viewer’s attention just enough to make you remember a products price and where to get it!

So with the nasty part out of the way, what do you want for Christmas?

Personally, I would like a new mobile phone LOL seriously, two days ago my old work horse a Nokia N95 8GB suddenly stopped working and down with it went nearly 6GB of images. Therefore, in the meantime before Santa drops me a new mobile down the chimney I’m stuck with an old Nokia N73 with a faulty camera. I will definitely be keeping my fingers crossed this Christmas.

Problem is though I’m not sure what handset I want to replace my old one with, but one thing it must have is a large internal memory of at least 1GB +.

So come on and share your crimbo desires with me! Whether it’s a mobile, camera, pc or anything else. On the other hand, give me some advice as to what mobile I should put on my Christmas list.

Today we have removed the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic from Pre-pay-as-you-go.co.uk on O2 today.

We put this down to the fact the 5310 comes with some remarkable features for a handset of its price, and what made it even more popular was the free Nokia MD-4 mini speakers that came free with it.

Here's the Description we used when the handset was on our site.

The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic O2 pay as you go mobile phone is a dedicated music player with a unique audio chip delivering crystal clear sound, which plays MP3, MP4, AAC, eAAc+ and WMA audio files. The 5310 supports play lists and album art as well, with music playback through either the stereo headset supplied in the box or via its integrated speaker. Along with dedicated music keys, a free 2GB MicroSD memory card included and fashionable good looks, this really is a mobile phone for music lovers everywhere.

     Nokia 5310 Features Include

2 Megapixel Camera with Zoom

Video Record/image Capture

Mp3 player, Media player

Vodafone 541 Touch screen Mobile £40

You may be thinking that any touch screen mobile that is available for £40 must be cheap and tacky! And to be honest that’s exactly what I thought before I got my hands on one. Once I did I quickly realised that Vodafone have got not just a cheaply priced touch screen handset, but also one with features that aren’t usually available on handsets at this price.

Currently available in pink and black the “541 Touch “or VF541 which it is also known as, has a remarkably responsive 2.4-inch QVGA colour touch screen, making navigation and general usage of the handset extremely easy. However, apart from the basic features that you would expect on 90% of handsets these days the 541 has built in radio with RDS, Bluetooth and usb connectivity for which both make sharing your favourite images and music with your friends a synch.

Before I purchase a handset I like to play around with it and explore the menu system, which with the 541 isn’t over complicated but I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered a little gem of a feature called home screen widgets. This truly thought full feature allows you to at the touch of a finger access your favourite content and swap and change it as you see fit, this feature I liked a lot it gives the handset character.

Again for the price usually you would expect the 541 to be rather a standard looking model but Vodafone seem to have put some real effort into producing an handset that not only has features to compete with handsets at near twice the price but also one that has the looks to compete at any level.

A quick round up of some of the features that make this handset remarkable for the price include, MicroSD memory card slot maximum 4GB supported, embedded images and animations, Accelerometer, Home screen Widgets and a 2.4” Touch screen.

To find out more about the Vodafone 541 and its features visit Vodafone PayG Mobiles

I.C.E On Your Mobile Phone

You are probably wondering what have ice and mobile phones got to do with one another, well in short, not a lot really! That is until you realise I.C.E is an acronym
which is short for ‘In case of an emergency’ I know your still thinking ok what’s the connection to your mobile, please read on!

If you are out somewhere and are unfortunate to have an accident, it is useful for a third party who may find you to see that your Mobile Phone has an I.C.E number on its list of contacts.

You may of course be thinking that you are never going to have an accident or incident that you would need to have an I.C.E number for. Well let me shatter the illusion for you, no one is ever in control and no one can ever legislate for any ‘Random, Incident’, we can risk manage but things in life can happen above and beyond our control.

The I.C.E number should be placed on your Mobile Phones contacts list so that anyone who has read this article and the Emergency services know whom your first point of contact should be. This is especially useful if you suffer from a complaint or Illness that may need specific treatment or information.

It maybe sounds unusual to have this kind of number on your handset but if you think about it from this perspective then hopefully you will understand the importance.

Stay Safe!

Vga Camera phones, why bother?

Back in 2003, the camera phone was still a relatively new concept and for the majority of handsets the camera was something you had to attach via a cable.

These cameras where basically of the same specification as the camera’s built into handsets at the time, which was 640X480 which is just 0.3 megapixels.

Now in 2009 the Vga camera phone still exists even though it is rumored that Samsung are due to release a 12-megapixel camera phone later this year.

Last week I was reading a thread on a forum I frequent and someone asked the question, why do manufacturers still bother to release phones with a Vga camera? At the time, I did not give it much thought.

Since then I’ve been updating pre-pay-as-you-go with new handsets and it struck me that a large part of current manufactures handsets are still sold with Vga cameras built in. This then reminded me of the question I read on the forum last week.

So why do manufacturers bother doing this? I suppose the answer is a simple one and is that there must be a market for them. However, I do not really understand why as mobiles containing a Vga camera are the most basic of handsets available.

For example, the LG KP130 is currently available on T-Mobile and is priced at £14.67, whilst this is a great price for a mobile phone if someone is willing to spend £10.33 pence more Vodafone have the 533, which has a 1.3 megapixel camera available. In laymen’s terms the camera is able to take pictures at 4 times the quality of the LG KP130 for little extra expense.
So I remain pondering the question, why bother with a Vga camera phone.

A court in Delaware US has received a complaint from Nokia insinuating that Apple had infringed upon Nokia patents that cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption and that all Apple iPhone models released since 2007 included Nokia’s intellectual property.

There are ten patents that make up this dispute; they all relate to technologies fundamental to making devices, which are compatible with, one or more of the GSM, UMTS 3G WCDMA and wireless LAN standards.

If you know anymore about this, please comment and share!

Being a bit of a Gavin and Stacey fan I spotted this offer straight off! This remarkable phone has season two pre-loaded! So you can watch it on your phone straight away! How fab is that?

Not only can you watch video on it, but it'll also do GPS for you! It'll play your MP3s too, and has all the extra features you'd expect from a top end phone like WiFi, Bluetooth and Stereo FM radio, as well as a modem! It has a 3.2Mpx camera.

It'll even work as a phone too! (Seriously I am surprised they remember to include the phone bit of some of these gadgets sometimes!)

The Nokia 5800 has Voice activated commands, Voice activated dialing, Speed dialing, Call waiting and hold and many more excellent phone features!
One huge feature being the Nokia 5800s 3.2" display which comes with auto-rotation, enabling viewing of images in landscape mode.

It also has Mobile TV which lets you watch TV on your phone. These programmes are often personalised and interactive. They're specially adapted to look good on a mobile phone. It comes with the little stand you see in the pictures so you can sit it on a desk and watch it without having to hold it! The nokia 5800 also comes with a stylus to navigate the screen.

The Nokia 5800 is available now at Vodafone on contract or PAYG

T-Mobile UK To Go Into Business With Orange

Finally, the ongoing saga of what or who would purchase T-Mobile UK has ended with Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom Orange agreeing to merge their UK mobile businesses.

T-Mobile’s decision to go with Orange seems initially to be motivated by money, with rival bidders Vodafone and O2 both bidding around £3.5 billion. This was according to industry sources far too low for Deutsche Telekom, who had hoped for bids of over £4 billion.

So what difference benefits does a merger between these two mobile giants mean for the consumer? Initially I don’t know but as T-Mobile and Orange have agreed to the venture being split 50:50 this will create a clear market leader in the UK with a combined market share of 37% with over 28 million customers. Making it the clear UK mobile market leader with O2 at 27% and Vodafone 25% respectively.

I personally hope this will be a catalyst for change in the UK mobile market, especially for prepaid customers who want to see more handsets made available.
