Asda mobile launched in 2007 and has placed its self as a rival to Tesco mobile who entered into the market in 2004 and have since gone on to attract more than 1 million customers in the UK.
The market that Asda has entered into is littered with failure and has seen other companies fail to attract the customers to become viable. Of which Easy mobile was the most prominent.
To do this Asda mobile has partnered with Vodafone to become the latest virtual network. Which means that they will use Vodafone’s network resources because they do not currently have their own licensed frequency, or have the entire infrastructure required to provide a mobile telephone service.
The most successful virtual network in the UK is Virgin mobile with over 4 million customers who setup in 1999 using the T-Mobile’s network.
The current handset range at Asda mobile has proved to be a disappointment to us at pre-pay-as-you-go as there are only 4 pay as you go handsets available.
But one thing Asda mobile does do well though is offer value for money. Their pay as you go price plan is probably the cheapest weve seen, with calls to any UK mobile or standard landline at 8p per minute and text messages to any UK mobile at 4p per message.
