Vodafone Access Gateway - a new way to boost your phone signal in buildings

A common experience with many mobile phone buyers – you spend weeks researching the various phones on offer, make your choice and place the order. The phone arrives and it looks and feels every bit as good as you thought it would. Savour this moment – because you know what’s going to happen next....?
That’s right, after giving it just a quick charge you fire it up and an all too familiar symbol on the screen makes your heart sink once more – just one lousy bar of signal! No matter how hard you try to convince yourself, you just know that you have bought yet another phone that will be difficult or impossible to use at home!

It's a sad fact that the walls of your home or office will absorb a lot of the energy that modern mobile signals are made of - not so much of a problem where you have perfect coverage, but for those of us not so fortunate it can be a real pain! To get around the problem would involve the networks erecting a lot more base stations and we all know that this just isn't going to happen.

Well, this inevitable disappointment may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to the new Access Gateway from Vodafone, you can have the equivalent of your very own personal base station in your own home or office. The Access Gateway works by using your existing home broadband connection to route your mobile voice and data calls, as well as texts via the internet. The device can handle 4 simultaneous calls and takes up no more space than a conventional router. Even if you have no signal at all where you live the Access Gateway will provide a means of making and receiving mobile calls with perfect clarity and maximum efficiency. No more wandering to the end of the garden or leaning out of windows – you’ll wonder how you ever managed without this little box of tricks before?

The Gateway, which uses Femtocell technology, will work with any Vodafone 3G handset and in any location - provided you have a broadband connection of over 1Mbps. Vodafone have tested the Gateway for over 6 months and claim that the technology works perfectly, even when the broadband line is in heavy use.

The downside is that it isn’t free, the device will be offered as either an outright purchase or as part of a monthly calling plan. However, anyone who’s struggled to make a call from home may well think that the convenience this device offers is well worth the initial cost? There are plans to develop the service further by offering the equivalent of Wi-Fi in your home, which may appeal to some, particularly when you consider that many people experience some difficulty with traditional Wi-Fi equipment. It remains to be seen, however, whether this idea will take off - but it could herald a whole new way of connecting to the mobile networks inside buildings and that has to be a welcome advance?

The Vodafone Access Gateway is available to buy on-line or from Vodafone stores and is expected to cost around £160. Monthly rental plans will also be offered for around £5 a month on its own, or as part of a mobile airtime contract.

Vodafone 541 Touch screen Mobile £40

You may be thinking that any touch screen mobile that is available for £40 must be cheap and tacky! And to be honest that’s exactly what I thought before I got my hands on one. Once I did I quickly realised that Vodafone have got not just a cheaply priced touch screen handset, but also one with features that aren’t usually available on handsets at this price.

Currently available in pink and black the “541 Touch “or VF541 which it is also known as, has a remarkably responsive 2.4-inch QVGA colour touch screen, making navigation and general usage of the handset extremely easy. However, apart from the basic features that you would expect on 90% of handsets these days the 541 has built in radio with RDS, Bluetooth and usb connectivity for which both make sharing your favourite images and music with your friends a synch.

Before I purchase a handset I like to play around with it and explore the menu system, which with the 541 isn’t over complicated but I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered a little gem of a feature called home screen widgets. This truly thought full feature allows you to at the touch of a finger access your favourite content and swap and change it as you see fit, this feature I liked a lot it gives the handset character.

Again for the price usually you would expect the 541 to be rather a standard looking model but Vodafone seem to have put some real effort into producing an handset that not only has features to compete with handsets at near twice the price but also one that has the looks to compete at any level.

A quick round up of some of the features that make this handset remarkable for the price include, MicroSD memory card slot maximum 4GB supported, embedded images and animations, Accelerometer, Home screen Widgets and a 2.4” Touch screen.

Being a bit of a Gavin and Stacey fan I spotted this offer straight off! This remarkable phone has season two pre-loaded! So you can watch it on your phone straight away! How fab is that?

Not only can you watch video on it, but it'll also do GPS for you! It'll play your MP3s too, and has all the extra features you'd expect from a top end phone like WiFi, Bluetooth and Stereo FM radio, as well as a modem! It has a 3.2Mpx camera.

It'll even work as a phone too! (Seriously I am surprised they remember to include the phone bit of some of these gadgets sometimes!)

New to the website this week is the 533 available on Vodafone pay as you go. It's a superb well rounded slim slider mobile phone that doesn’t cost the earth. It’s slim and light, and comes with an MP3 player and Bluetooth, and a quality 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x zoom.

Vodafone recently reduced the price of the majority of all of their pay as you go handsets and the 533 was one of them. Now available at £25 with £5 free credit its a true bargain for the price.

How To Save Money With A Vodafone Pay As You Go Sim Card

I hated being tied to a monthly mobile phone contract. I like having freedom and being able to control how much I spend each month. I don't want to throw away my money, so now I always go with a pay as you go sim only option.

I wasn't sure if my current phone would be compatible with the Vodafone pay as you go sim . But, it didn't matter, Vodafone sorted it all out, and unlocked it for me. I'm more than happy with my phone, and it still works perfectly. Keeping it saves me money and I don't have to waste my time learning how to use a new phone. I like the fact that you can keep your old number too. There's nothing worse than having to waste your credit sending out the.. I've changed my number text. It's expensive too, especially if you've got a lot of mates.

There are all sorts of pay as you go options like the Vodafone super sim you can choose from. I find that I use my phone the most at the weekends, so I top up with a fiver and get my weekend calls free. I also get unlimited texts too, so my credit goes a lot further these days.

You can get a lot more for your money these day with a sim only option, and some Vodafone pay as you go packages offer even more minutes and texts than monthly contracts. If you top up £10 with the Vodafone freedom pack you get 100 minutes and 300 texts. Add just another fiver and you double you talktime and texts.

Vodafone consider bidding for T-Mobile UK

The rumours that Deutsche Telekom, the owner of T-Mobile Uk have considered selling their UK operation have been circling around the press for a while now, with the 3 network being the first party touted as interested in making an offer.

Today it has emerged from sources as yet unknown, that Vodafone which currrently has a 25% UK market share, is mulling over the idea of making a bid.
So far Vodafone have declined to make a comment on the rumour, so who knows what the truth is.

If Vodafone where to complete a purchase of T-Mobile UK, Vodafone would become the largest mobile operator in the UK with a market share of 40%.

Any such move by Vodafone could be blocked by regulators.

A breakdown of Vodafone extras

Text unlimited

Vodafone text unlimited gives you free text messages to use at different times depending on how much you top up with each month.

Top up with £5 a month and send free unlimited texts on weekday evenings.
Top up with £10 a month and you can send free unlimited texts every weekday evening and all weekend.
Top up with £30 a month and you get unlimited free texts all day every day.

Vodafone's pay less to text and talk allows you to get more minutes and text messages for your money, with great value text packs and call packs. Each pack lasts up to 30 days, text from as little as 3p per message and make calls from 13p a minute. The Larger the pack, the less it costs to text or make a call.

Buy 70 texts for £5 equivalent price per text is 7p.
Buy 200 texts for £10 equivalent price per text is 5p.
Buy 500 texts for £15 equivalent price per text is 3p.
Buy 675 texts for £20 equivalent price per text is 3p.

Call packs

Buy 100 minutes for £15 equivalent price per text is 15p a minute.
