You might not know it, but Sony has been quietly cranking out some of the best Android smartphones on the market. In traditional Sony-style, the hardware on these devices is top-notch, and the software isn’t totally terrible. One of the places where Sony is succeeding, at least partially, is in the mid-range market. Their next entry here is the Xperia L, which will soon enter the UK.
Xperia L – Specs and Features?
The Xperia L is the successor to the Xperia J. It has some of the same design aesthetics, so if you liked that handset you’ll probably like this one.
This handset comes with a mid-range 4.3-inch 480 x 854 TFT capacitive touchscreen. And comes stocked with Android 4.1.2 with Sony’s not-to-bothersome skin attached and 8GB of internal storage and 1GB of RAM.
Dual Core Processor
When looking at this device, you have to remember that it isn’t supposed to be competing with the Galaxy S4 or the HTC One. It is a mid-range device that is meant to appeal to those buyers looking to buy a cheap but well manufactured smartphone.
Once you start using apps, however, the device runs smoothly enough for basic gaming and application use. Outside of using apps the device performs well, even with a skinned version of Android running.
The Xperia L also has an 8MP rear-facing camera, which is great for a low to mid-end handset. It can shoot 720p video and also comes with a VGA front-facing camera for Skype calls.
The quality of the pictures is simply okay. You’d expect a little better low-light performance from an 8MP snapper, but regular pictures turned out pretty good. Comparing them to the iPhone 5 or other top-end Android devices, you’ll probably be disappointed. However, as a mid-range camera, the device is acceptable.
The last strike against the Xperia L is that it has a pretty small battery at 1750mAh. It’d have been nice if they had added a battery with a little juice, but what do you expect from a phone meant to be cheap. The good news is that it is replaceable so you can get yourself an extra battery if you need to.
Xperia L Hands On Video Review
Overall the Sony Xperia L is a great mid-range phone. If you are the type of buyer who chooses devices not on specs, but on price, the Xperia L will be a great choice. If, on the other hand, you have more money to spend, there are other higher end devices out there that have better performance, better camera and better battery life.
