A Truly Tough One – The Samsung Galaxy S II vs. The Huawei Ascend P1 S

A Truly Tough One – Huawei Ascend P1 Vs Samsung Galaxy S2

Choosing a big brand name phone is an easy thing to do. Everyone’s heard of Samsung, Nokia and Apple and it’s a pretty fair bet that one of their devices is going to be reliable and good. Choosing a smaller brand might be in your favour though, and it’s worth considering going with a lesser known name sometimes. Samsung is obviously renowned for creating sleek, fast devices. Huawei, on the other hand isn’t very well known at all. However, a big advantage of Huawei is that they tend to produce very affordable smart phones.

Samsung Galaxy S II vs. The Huawei Ascend P1 S

We took the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Huawei Ascend P1 S and put them to a direct comparison to see if the smaller brand could compete against the big name. Both phones are 3.5G devices, and both run Android’s 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. And we were pleasantly surprised by the results. Read on to find out how Huawei did against the Samsung giant…

What the Huawei Ascend P1 S Can Do For You…

First off, the Huawei is the faster phone. It comes equipped with a 1500 MHz processor, as compared to the 1200 MHz processor on the Galaxy, making it more powerful, snappier and generally more responsive. It also has better picture quality.

The Huawei Ascend P1′s screen has around thirty per cent higher resolution, and about twenty per cent more PPI (pixels per inch). This results in a display that’s crisper, more detailed and brighter than that of the Galaxy. The Huawei is also around twenty per cent thinner than the Samsung, as well as being around twenty per cent generally smaller. So if portability is your thing, you really might want to think about the Huawei. These may be small differences, but that just shows what a great contender Huawei is against Samsung.

What the Samsung Galaxy S II Can Do For You…

There are still a couple of reasons that you might want to go for the Galaxy though. Firstly, the screen on the Galaxy, whilst having slightly worse picture quality, is a Super AMOLED Plus screen, rather than the regular Super AMOLED screen on the Huawei.

AMOLED Plus screens are thinner, and drain less battery power than their AMOLED predecessors. The Galaxy is also around ten per cent lighter than the Huawei, probably due to the screen material. Finally, the Samsung does come with much more internal storage, coming with a full 16 GB rather than the 4 GB on the Huawei. If you like to store a lot of music or photos on your phone, then 16 GB is a lot of space, and may be enough to persuade you to go with the Samsung.

Which One Should I Buy?

The differences between these two phones really come down to the details. We like the extra memory on the Samsung, but we like the power of the Huawei. In the end, we’d recommend the Huawei Ascend P1 S, simply because it’s a bargain. Its price point is cheaper than the Samsung, and you get a faster phone with a better screen. Huawei really should be considered when you’re thinking about getting a new device.
