If you’re still feeling the pinch of the shaky economy as so many of us are, you’re probably as excited as we were to see an Android-powered smartphone come on the market for a mere £40. If you’re a lot like us, your next thought was probably regarding the quality of said uber-cheap smartphone. After all, that’s not much more than you would pay for a rock-bottom flip phone with zero “smart” capabilities. The Alcatel OT-903 promises all the bang without the buck, so come along with us on a brief tour of this awesomely inexpensive handset.
We might as well get it out of the way first, right? There are some very obvious drawbacks to this cute little Smarthone.
On the down side, the Alcatel OT-903 features a tiny screen, just 2.8 inches and 240×320 pixels. The processor also made us a bit nervous at 650MHz. This is not the phone for watching lots of HD video or playing graphic-heavy games; it will slow down drastically.
On the back, you’ll find a 2 Mega Pixel camera that delivers shots and video that are…well…what you’d expect from a 2MP camera.
Specifications and Features
We admit it – we were pleasantly surprised by this handset. Given the specs, we went in with low expectations, and they were exceeded.
In the looks department, the Alcatel OT-903 is excellent for the price. Available in black and pink and with dimensions of 110 x 57.6 x 12.5mm, it feels a bit light for its size.
While the screen is low-res to the extreme and very small, it does what it’s supposed to do. The capacitive touchscreen capabilities surprised us, never missing a tap. Battery life was also surprisingly good, giving us a few days worth of normal usage (text, email, a few calls here and there).
Arriving with 150MB of internal memory and a 2GB memory card, the Alcatel OT-903 has the capacity for a 32GB card, making it competitive in the storage expansion area. Key arrangement is unique but functional and responsive, with a giant Home key sitting beneath the usual Back, Search and Menu.
The biggest plus to this handset is that it comes with Android Gingerbread. Sure, it’s not the newest version of the Android OS out there – but it’s a favorite for a reason. It runs smoothly, allows for customization and strangely makes the phone feel like home.
Alcatel OT-903 – Do You Want One?
Despite the drawbacks, we’re highly impressed with the Alcatel OT-903. A Gingerbread Smartphone for £40? Come on now, this is a pretty cool little handset for the money. If you’re on a budget, this is an ideal phone for basic needs. We think it would also make an exceptional first phone for kids, or for those of older generations who simply don’t want all the bells and whistles. This phone does what it’s intended to do, and it does it well. Of all the budget handsets we’ve seen, this one stands out among the best.
