Grab your friends, your tents and your sleeping bags – the iPhone 5 is coming! We know that many of you will join the hipster masses outside Apple outlets worldwide this year, when the highly anticipated (aren’t they all?) latest iPhone makes its debut. Many die-hard Apple devotees were drooling with anticipation all throughout 2011, when a new Apple device was expected but, sadly, not delivered. Collecting all the rumor-mill’s best gossip, we feel comfortable anticipating the iPhone 5 sometime in the latter part of 2012, although that could mean anywhere between September and Christmas.
Before you start packing your survival kit for those long, cold nights spent on the pavement outside the Apple store, take a few minutes and read up on the anticipated new Apple Smartphone – trust us, it’ll just make the anticipation sweeter.
iPhone 5 – Rumored Specs
If you’re craving a visual, just hop on over to YouTube (Or watch the video at the end of this article!) – there is at least one, although probably many more videos which claim to showcase the new iPhone in all its secrecy-veiled glory. However, it’s up to you how much faith to put in these rumors.
Among others, we’ve heard the following regarding the next Apple Smartphone. According to some, it will measure just 7.6mm thick, making it great for all you skinny-jeans devotees. The ultra-sleek handset is reported to measure 123.83 x 58.47mm, making a long and lean iPhone to say the least. A bigger screen is heavily rumored as well, supposedly measuring 640×1136 and 4.06 inches. Among other things, this stretched-out 4 inch display allows for another row of apps, making the new Apple Smartphone even easier to use. Yes, there are bigger screens out there – but then again, they’re not on iPhones.
Other rumored specs include the relocation of the earphone jack to the bottom of the device, and a shrunken dock connector approximately the size of a micro USB. We’ve also heard tell of a sexy metal backing and a slightly smaller home button on a proportionately smaller panel.
The New Apple Smartphone – What Do We Really Know?
As with any as-yet-unveiled handset, these are all just speculations. Many sources claim to have seen prototypes and demo versions of the iPhone 5, but we’ve always found it safer to treat such claims as just that – claims – until we see the actual phone for sale in an Apple store or online on say on the Orange or Phones4u websites.
One of the most popular sources of these rumors comes from the prototype that was mysteriously lost in a San Francisco bar. With the mess that Apple went through regarding an eerily similar “lost” prototype of the iPhone 4, we’re a bit suspicious on this one. Deliberate leaks happen all the time. Whether this particular mishap was truly accidental or on purpose, it had the effect you would expect – wild rumors, heightened anticipation (never a bad thing) and a whirlwind of scrambling by Apple to get the device back. They’ve apparently gone so far as to offer reward money, but given the hush-hush nature of the unveiling and the unparalleled glee the finder must have felt upon realizing just what they had discovered, we’re rather doubtful that anybody will step up with said prototype to claim that reward cash.

iPhone 5 – Do You Want One?
Okay, we admit it – that’s a stupid question. If you’re reading this, you almost certainly do want one, and you’ll probably be taking time off from work or school, risking frostbite and drinking coffee out of a flask as you wait patiently on the street for the Apple store to open its doors on the release date.
Apple-mania aside, from what we’ve been able to dig up, the iPhone 5 does appear to sport some very respectable upgrades. In a world that flings new handsets at us every five seconds, you have to hand it to a company that actually waits until they have something new before releasing a new phone. Pack some snacks and dress warmly – this iPhone “COULD” be well worth the wait.
