Let’s face it, the world can be a scary place. Once you have children, it gets even scarier. We all want to protect our kids and keep them safe, but we can’t put them on leashes (as much as we might want to at times). For parents, care givers of any kind and virtually anybody who enjoys knowing the whereabouts of family or friends, Family GPS Tracker, available in Google Play (formerly Android Marketplace) is just the ticket.

A great deal of this app’s appeal is right in its’ name – you can track people’s locations right from your smartphone. Install it on the phones of all your family members and you’re set. Not only can you keep track of where your family members are, but this app is loaded with extras – much more than we expected from a free app – that increase security and convenience.

For starters, the app alerts you to known sex offenders in your area, as well as any area your children venture into. This can be a bit disturbing at first, but once that initial shock wears off, you’ll welcome the peace of mind – remember, knowledge is power.

Another potentially life-saving feature is the emergency function. Silent and easy to access, this is essentially a real-life ‘panic button’ and can be activated by any member of the family if they’re in distress or need help in any way. If the app offered this feature alone, we’d already be willing to pay for it, but it comes bundled with other features for free!

Family GPS Tracker – Downsides and Glitches

We’ve come to expect a few glitches with most free apps, and we’ve been pleasantly surprised in the past to see most of them resolved quite efficiently. Although we didn’t run into any glitches, the app-review grapevine tells us that in some cases, the GPS locations are a bit off. By “a bit,” we must include an anonymous source who spotted a ten mile difference between where a family member actually was and where the Tracker reported them to be.

Yes, that’s cause for concern. However, given the rather overwhelming number of extremely positive reviews this app has gotten so far, we’re assuming that the ten-mile glitch was just that – a glitch.

The sole negative factor we could find within the app itself (glitch notwithstanding) was the need to refresh. We would have loved real-time reports, but in reality, tapping your phone to get an updated report really isn’t’ that big of a deal. Perhaps something to consider upgrading (hint hint, developers) but certainly not a deal-breaker.

If you worry about your family when they’re not safe at home, this app will pay for itself with peace of mind. Oh…wait a minute…that’s right! This little gem is free. Considering the fact that T-Mobile currently wants ten dollars per month for essentially the same service, you owe it to yourself to give this app a try.
