Apple iPhone incarnations. What improvements have there been?

Apple iPhone incarnations. What improvements have there been?

The Apple iPhone has come a long way from its early, heady days back in 2007 when it was first exposed to the world by Steve Jobs. Clad in a black and silver casing, it was revolutionary, and extremely useful to the consumer.

Now, we have the iPhone 4s, which is a world away from that original iPhone. If the first one was so good and so revolutionary, how much better can the latest model be? Here, we take a look at its growth of the previous Apple iPhone incarnations, and also look to the future with the imminent iPhone 5.

Let’s look at some basics first. One of the most exciting things about the iPhone when it was first released was that it allowed you to store music on it. Of course, MP3 players were no biggie back then, but this was a phone, and it handled songs easily. With the first iPhone available in a 4GB or a 8GB model, this meant that you could either have 1000 or 2000 of your favourite tracks on it. The next big leap in music storage space came with the 32GB 3GS model, which allowed you to hold up to 8,000 tracks on it. And all of the Apple iPhone incarnations have continued to provide increased capacity all the way up to the most recent model, the 4s, which has a 64GB model (the first time the iPhone has stretched that far), and can give you storage for 16,000 tracks. If you own that much music, that’s great.

iPhone Screen size

Screen size and resolution stayed the same on the early Apple iPhone incarnations until the release of the iPhone 4

Screen size and resolution stayed the same for some time as the early Apple iPhone incarnations continued to be released. It wasn’t until the iPhone 4 was released that resolution received the boost it required. The screen size has always been the same for every single iteration of the phone but the iPhone 4 took the resolution from 480×320 (iPhone to iPhone 3GS) up to 960×640.

iPhone Camera

Unsurprisingly, with the boost in mobile camera technology, the quality of the camera on the iPhone has seen a steady improvement over the years. Back in the days of the original iPhone, you were looking at a 2-megapixel camera. This was not bad for that time, but obviously progress moves us forward, and the iPhone 4S is the latest and best when it comes to cameras, with a very respectable 8 megapixel camera on board. It also shoots HD video, making it a competitor with many of the more conventional cameras on the market today.

Siri

Perhaps the biggest improvement has been SIRI. This piece of technology is exclusive to the iPhone 4S, and is basically an assistant on your phone, one that gets to know your lifestyle and habits, and then maps out your day on the phone. This personal assistant helps you make meetings and remember birthdays through voice activation.

iPhone 5?

Well, this is exciting. Rumours are rife, but the main two innovations that Apple is apparently thinking about adding to the iPhone 5 a bigger screen (the iPhone has had a 3.5 inch screen since year one) and no home button. These two innovations alone would make the new iteration truly groundbreaking (for iPhone fans anyway). So let us wait and see…
