The LG Optimus L3 is new and coming to stores sometime this month. Not a world-beater when it comes to features, expect to see this little phone in the low to mid price range.
LG Optimus L3
Who is it for?
This is a good question. Immediately, you are struck with the feeling that it really doesn’t offer too much for anyone, but then you delve a little deeper and begin to get a clear idea of the target audience for this type of smartphone.
There is really nothing here that would trouble a top end smartphone like the iPhone, but the unit has been designed for another market entirely. Rather than have all the bells and whistles that make geeks and high end users happy, this one seems to be aimed squarely at those people who have little money and a need for a purely social phone. This means Facebook, Twitter and SMS, basically.
We’re talking about the young and the mobile. Essentially, we are looking at young people who just want a phone they can pick up and use quickly, without having to worry about what they’ve downloaded or what price plan they are on. They won’t care that they have the latest communication app because they’ve got their basic and trusted services that they have been using for years.

LG have gone on record to say that they think there is a group out there that actually doesn’t need a complicated phone. While they may want a smartphone that allows them to use services such as Youtube or Google Maps, they would probably settle for one that gives them Facebook and SMS. The high level of functionality that an iPhone 4S or BlackBerry has these days is lost on this particular market sector.
So we’re talking parents who want their kids to have social lives or young working socialites, who don’t want their social lives to be bogged down by tons of tech that just gets confusing and in their way.
LG Optimus L3 Features
3.2 Inch Touchscreen DisplayThe TFT touchscreen has 3.2 inches when it comes to size, with a pixel count of 240 x 320. You can use multi touch, which, while pretty much expected these days, is still quite special on a low to middle range phone.
Micro SD Card SlotThe phone comes with a micro SD card slot, with up to 32GB of storage available. Internally, it presents you with 1GB of storage.
3.2 Megapixel CameraThe camera isn’t going to set hearts fluttering. You’re looking at 3.2 MP here with this phone, with auto focus and video. This is not staggering, but it is functional, and appropriate for the price point.
Android 2.3 GingerbreadThe operating system is Android, and comes with the Gingerbread 2.3 set. The CPU is 800MHz. Again, size is not the strong point here, but you get a reasonably pacey phone with a not-too ancient operating system.
Pre-installed AppsThe phone comes with all the usual pre-installed apps you would expect with Gingerbread, such as YouTube, Gmail, Facebook and so on.
We think the LG Optimus L3 is a good entry-level smartphone, perfect for those who don’t want confusion, but instead just want to be able to check their social network status, and use SMS, as well as watch videos now and then.
