It’s a great idea to buy a mobile phone for a Christmas gift for a young person, as they get older and start to go out with their friends. Mobiles mean they can be in with the crowd having a modern mobile with all the latest gadgets on it (camera, mp3 player, games, social networks) but also that you can ring them when they’re late home and make sure they’re on their way. It can also be used to track children as there are several companies offering this service. You can then keep an eye on where your kids are.
A mobile is also useful for when they want to ring you for a lift home. It can be reassuring to know that children can ring you the minute they need help with a mobile phone – but that’s only true if they have credit on it. Sometimes the more credit you put on a phone the more they’ll spend. This is something to watch with children – keep an eye on how much they spend on their mobile and set limits. Make sure they know what the limits are and it’ll be easy to restrict this.
So they can always ring you it’s possible to add a reverse number call option to their phone book. Look into these though as they can be quite dear to use.
So what age should you buy a child a mobile phone? I think the older they are the better. Very young children have no need of one – buy them a plastic toy version that beeps if they insist on a phone. Early teens should be the earliest – some parents see the start of secondary school as important for this first phone purchase. Whether you buy one for Christmas or a birthday, it’s a good idea to check with the child what phone they might want – if they are going to want to take photos on their phone it’s important to make sure they have a camera built in! A phone really can make an excellent Christmas present!

I got my 11 year old daughter a Vodafone 533 for her birthday, she uses the camera more than anything else.
I decided not to give buy credit yet as none of her freinds own one and only i call her to make sure she is on her way home from school.
Is phone credit the new pocket money?
Anyway, glad to see that Christmas is now been mentioned in July;
can I remind everyone to be prepared for Easter
LOL at least with this site your not being bombarded with crimbo adds, give it 6 weeks or so and they will be everywhere.
Oh and i suppose credit is like pocket money for kids, older ones than mine anyway.
Our kids both got to the point of writing their own Christmas lists before we bought them one so it was a natural process.
When the original iPhone became available I got myself one and the kids were so jealous we got them one each for Christmas and they still both love them and are desperate to get the new video capable model which, of course, I like to tease them with.
The problem with buying a mobile phone for a child, or more specifically a teenager is the peer presure they seem to suffer from with regards to owning the latest handsets.
A few weeks back my son practicly begged me for a Tocco lite for his birthday, if he wasnt getting it he wouldnt use a mobile he told his mother.
So after all the running around at the last minute, he opened the box used it for 10 minutes and didnt touch it again for a couple of hours. He now wished we had got him a 5 or 8 megapixel handset.
You cant win with kids
I run an online business selling pay as you go mobile phones. Since beginning of December 2009 I have seen an increase request for Touch-Screen Pay as you go mobile phone handsets.
Many of the requests are coming from younger users below the age of 25.
